nerve on top of foot causes pain big toe

I'm 34 and just recently when a nerve on the top of my foot is touched, either with shoes, sitting on my foot or just about anything, my big toes feels like its being stabbed. I originally thought I had a splinter in my toe but its this nerve 6 inches away that is causing the pain. Has anyone ever seen this or have any ideas as to what it might be?
