Recovery from comminuted fracture, mid-shaft, 5th metatarsal

I had surgery 9 weeks ago for an oblique, comminuted fracture mid-shaft of the 5th metatarsal. Two pins were inserted. I'm in an AirCast "boot" now, but there is still slight daily swelling in the foot and lower leg.
I'm 64, moderately active. Is such a long recovery time normal for this type of fracture? My surgeon tells me it is "a normal part of healing." I'm sick of wearing this boot and my leg muscles are stiff.

Quag Heel cushions for heel spurs and plantar fasciitis. When your first steps getting out of bed in the mornings cause pain in your heel, you may have plantar fasciitis.
