left foot shooting pain

I woke up this morning with a sharp, shooting pain from the base of my big toe going straight up the top of my foot to about half way to my ankle. It happens about every 3 seconds to 10 seconds. What is this? I can't go back to sleep. I have tried walking and rubbing it and nothing makes it go away. It is so sharp a pain that I jerk my foot in pain. Please help me.
